No Man’s Sky turns seven: Sean Murray teases ‘Echoes’ update

It’s hard to believe that it’s been seven years since Hello Games first launched No Man’s Sky, the massively successful sci-fi sandbox game that has won the hearts of players across the globe (after a rough start, of course). The game, first released on PS4 and PC in 2016, has changed dramatically since then, and it seems the “sky’s the limit” for what’s still to come.

No Man’s Sky Echoes is coming

To celebrate the big anniversary, Hello Games put together a nostalgia-filled video that takes us on a quick journey through the game’s storied history and major updates. If you’re me, you’ll be particularly intrigued by the video’s finale, which teases an upcoming update called ‘Echoes.’ We don’t know much about it yet, but the announcement me thinking it has something to do with the Korvax.

Celebrating seven years of No Man’s Sky

In a heartfelt statement accompanying the video, Sean Murray, the founder of Hello Games and creator of No Man’s Sky, looked back on the game’s journey. He opened up about what it felt like when players first began exploring the game’s vast, procedurally-generated universe at launch, calling it the “culmination of five previous years of very hard work for our tiny team.” That tiny team, by the way, peaked at just 15 members pre-launch. Talk about a small team with big dreams!

Murray’s words revealed the deep connection he has with No Man’s Sky, saying, “I’ve been working on this game for nearly a third of my life, and it’s been more successful than we ever planned or dreamed.” It hasn’t been smooth sailing, though, as he admitted the journey hasn’t always been easy. But it’s clear the support and passion of the players and the community have been a driving force behind the game’s continued development and success.

Looking to the future, he says there’s “still a lot we want to try, so much we are still excited for.” He points to Echoes as the next step in the game’s ongoing journey. What are your thoughts on the upcoming Echoes update? I know it’s pretty much off the menu at this point, but I’m hoping for procedurally generated and player-owned space stations, to this day! What do you think it’s going to include? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
