Sea of Stars shows off its timed combat system in latest update

Sabotage Studio, creator of the highly anticipated indie game Sea of Stars, recently released a new gameplay video of its combat system. The turn-based JRPG inspired by classics like Chrono Trigger and Secrets of Mana is set to release next year for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and Nintendo Switch and any bit of information we can get about it is exciting, to say the least! Back in June, it was announced that the title would be delayed from its original release date of this upcoming holiday, but at least a demo would be on the horizon in its place.

In the extremely short clip below, you’ll see timed hits and timed blocks being demonstrated. Both mechanics will allow you to do a bit more than just sit around and wait for the enemy to attack you. Instead, you’ll have an opportunity to deflect enemy projectiles, parry attacks and counter attack as a follow up to a mob’s original turn, provided you time it properly. If nothing else, it does seek to turn the traditional 90s combat formula on its head, and I’m excited to see how fans receive the change.

Sea of Stars is a turn-based RPG inspired by the classics. It tells the story of two Children of the Solstice who will combine the powers of the sun and moon to perform Eclipse Magic, the only force capable of fending off the monstrous creations of the evil alchemist known as The Fleshmancer.

Because Sabotage values quality of life for its team members amidst increasing reports of industry crunch and the craftsmanship of the final product upon its release, the studio’s decision to hold back the game to make it the best it could possibly be without having to cut corners or work themselves to death is an admirable standard to set in place. Let me know in the comments if you’re excited for Sea of Stars when it finally releases at some point next year, and be sure to wishlist it using the widget at the top of this article!
